Match Report
TIGERS XMAS TOURNAMENT(TAKE 2)
After the last sub aqua tournament whereby all the teams were playing a combination of football and octopush, this replay was much anticipated. The weather had potential to be awful but the day started well and so did the football!
Tigers 2 v Meadway 0
The first time these two met Meadway only had 6 players and they outperformed the 7 of the Tigers! This time, the Tigers had 8 ha ha! And for my next trick...
Seriously, having met twice before, both sides had a good idea of which players to look out for. The game started and Tigers quickly moved into 5th gear. They played some excellent football and put Meadway on the back foot from the off. Cameron and Jake in particular were going to terrorise the Meadway defence and in fact, both boys scored quality goals.
Cameron’s goal was a burst down the right hand side, from a seemingly impossible angle and distance, Cameron rifled a superb shot into the far corner of the goal giving the keeper no chance. Jake’s effort was a good example of the referee playing advantage. Three times he was fouled on route to goal but he was honest, kept his feet and was rewarded with a good goal. The other six Tigers put in good performances giving the team a ‘polished’ look and bringing a smile to the faces of the Tigers crowd.
Tigers 2 v AFC Whitchurch 0
Again, this game was a good example of how Tigers can play good football when they try. Every player put in their tackles, hustled the opposition and tried some of the tricks they had learnt at training.
Having a memory like a goldfish, I remember Sam and Reiss being the goalscorers in this game.
Sam’s goal was a perfect lob after the keeper had come off his line. At youth football, a number of lobbed goals are more fluke than skill. This finish was no fluke. Sam looked up and deliberately flicked the ball over the stranded keeper. Good goal.
The other goal was a Reiss special. A significant amount of Tigers pressure saw the ball come across the Whitchurch goal. Up stepped Reiss to smash an unstoppable shot past the keeper and receive probably the biggest cheer of the day.
Tigers 0 v Wrightchoice 0
This was a game where the defence came out on top. Tigers players did well but couldn’t find the breakthrough to win what could have been described as the decider between the two sides.
The two players to note in this game were Max and Callum. Max playing his preferred role in defence often brought the ball out into midfield and his distribution was excellent. When troubled, his pace and reading of the game ensured that the keeper had little to do.
Callum was playing only his second game at left midfield. A good player, Callum thrives more when involved in the match and he was certainly involved in this game. His overlapping and crossing were top notch and his tackling improved as the game went on.
Tigers 0 v Caversham Trents 3
The final game and one where Rafa Bennett swapped his players around yet again. Whilst the result showed a defeat, two players in particular put in good performances. Joe and Thomas.
Joe playing as the lone striker showed some excellent skill up front and was unlucky not to score on one occasion. Good defending from the opposition. Up front, Joe possesses great awareness and looks to close the opposition down but also hold the ball up and find his team mates.Thomas played in a defensive midfield role and this lad seems to run on Duracell batteries. Non stop moving, he must be a nightmare to get to sleep at home. Having had a spell in goal, Thomas is once again finding his outfield form making important tackles and bursting forward to support his team mates.
Summary
2 wins, a draw and a defeat is no disgrace. Ultimately, the results didn’t matter as it was the performance of the players that was important. Each and every player gave their all in the games and the first two matches show what they can do when each is on his game at the same time.
Good performances all round made it difficult to give out a MOTM award. However, Callum picked up the accolade for his sportsmanship and his attitude on the day.
