Match Report

Lions 1 - 5 Woodley Town Kestrels

A bright Saturday morning saw the newly formed Lions squad take to the field against local rivals, Woodley Town Kestrels. A number of the Lions players had friends playing against them so they were certainly up for the game.

Unfortunately, star winger, SSaw, failed a late fitness test and had to miss the game. As a result, a passing CP was nabbed and duly helped out by playing in goal.

The game started pretty evenly with the Lions players trying to find their positions and get to know their team mates. The main threat from the opposition came from two very tricky players who had obviously eaten their weetabix before they arrived.

With about 6 minutes played, the Lions broke away and HD scored the opening goal with a fine strike. Not used to celebrating, HD turned around to her team mates wondering what to do next. (Mental note, must work on goal celebrations!)

Anyway, as the game progressed, the Kestrels got more involved and soon found the equaliser. Some excellent defending by DG, Jbra and JL kept them at bay although the Kestrels soon broke through again. Halftime 2-1 to Kestrels.

At halftime, the Bennett Management team gave their team talk and changed things around a bit in terms of positions. EN and JJ moved up front, JL moved back to partner the resolute DG in defence leaving OD (Capt.), EN, Jbra and TT in midfield.

From the kick off, Kestrels came on strongly and netted three very quick goals. (2nd mental note, check if halftime oranges contain any alcohol!) The Lions were shaken but to their credit, they didn't give up and came back fighting. The two Kestrels stars were running the show but now TT, JBra, DG and JL started to get a grip and reduce their effectiveness.

In the last ten minutes, the Lions had 3 cracking counter attacks. The first with JBra bursting through a number of tackles to see his shot well saved and then JJ had two great chances to reduce the deficit.

The final whistle went and everyone commented and how excellent the referee had been. Oops, how excellent the Lions had been. They never gave up, they started to learn their positions and they did themselves proud in the second half with their tackling and effort.

At the end of the game, both managers agreed to have a penalty shoot out to give everyone a chance to have a shot. This time, the Lions came out on top with some excellent finishing and keeping from CP.

Overall, a good start and lots of positives to take away from the game. If we're aiming to enter a league next season, these games will put us in good stead.
