MINI TOURNAMENT - 15/3/08

The boys ended the season on a high despite not being able to train in the week due to bad weather.

The line up for the Lions team for this week: Mitch, Taylor, Josh, Latif, Olie, Joe B, Adam, James, Joseph, Dylan, and a mystery guest player.

Game One :- Kestrels 3 vs Lions 1

The stewards enquiry was on standby as Lee Bennett took to the pitch to referee and there were boos from the touch line and shouts of come on ref can't you see that was a corner not a goal kick. Sadly for the lions, Lee had been to the doctors and had finally managed to put a pea in his new whistle, to take control of the ever growing crowd..

At first it was thought that Steve had been caught short and had disappeared down the plug hole or possibly mugged by the lions for early half time oranges. Steve was going his bit for sports relief and had to leave to play military golf… left, right , left, right up the fairway…, so Hayley and James dad stepped into the breach. Well done them, but we did miss the wind assisted pram striker.

The lads started this game well with defence and in the first instance some good play by James narrowly missing a goal. Unfortunately Kestrels got a goal early which only spurred on Joe who was in goal on to make a great save under the pressure in the first half by Kestrels.

JJ, Latif and James made some good tackles which sent the ball back down the line.

Joe was brilliant in goal he produced a great big kick which almost sent every one for cover down the air raid shelters. This kick assisted Taylor off down the side for a good run but good defending by Kestrels meant the Lions forced a corner.

Great end to end stuff this.

Another great save by Joe and another good run by Taylor and cross to Mitch resulted in Goooooooooaaaaaaal for Mitch and the Lions.

At this point Latif came off for the mystery player.

Another good save by Joe, unlucky Kestrels and again great kick by Joe which sent Adam on his way and whom also forced a corner.

GOAL for the Kestrels.

Great tackling by Mitch resulted in a throw in which went to Taylor who again managed to force a corner. Unlucky Saints a near miss again.

Good tackling by JJ, great play by Mitch, Dylan and Taylor and James.

Johan asked if the reporter could do shorthand after she complained that she could not write the events fast enough, to which she replied if only.

Break

The lads played well in their first game of the day, but suspicions arose when the Oranges were distributed amongst the players by Johan and he was reported as saying this will put fire in your tummy. Shortly after there was a fight amongst the parents clambering for the remainder oranges.

Whilst waiting for their next game the Lions were having a kick about. Fowl play caused a ball to burst and the team gathered round for a group hug to console Adam who had been distraught (it was my favourite ball could be heard between the sobs) and for some much needed team bonding. It was also suggested that the team might have been performing a hacker to frighten the next team - good result it worked. Adams dad continued his autopsy on the broken ball and started explaining to the kids, how he remember the days when footballs where made of stronger stuff. At this point the lions suspected a quick history lesson was going to be put in place, on a non school day, and decided it was time to quickly depart.

Game Two - Lions vs Whiteknights

Result 1-0 win by Lions

The Lions ended this mini tournament on a high with a 1-0 win.

Mitch was made Captain.

JJ, Latif and Mystery player were sub for the start of the game.

Olie was in goal. James, Joseph and Dylan at the back, Joe, Adam and Mitch up front.

Taylor again was unlucky with a shot on goal and James forced a corner.

Taylor and Mitch made a good partnership which was beginning to develop up front and several good passes and some good play resulted in several corners and a few chances on goal.

James forced a corner but unfortunately this resulted in a goal kick.

Again Taylor was unlucky to score a goal and Mitch produced some good play and included a header.

A rolling sub system seemed to have been used this game which resulted in all getting a game.

More good play by Taylor and Joe long throw to Mitch who shot towards goal and a little nudge by Taylor firmly placed in goal, CELEBRATIONS all round.

Mumblings about the brandy in the oranges working wonders went all round the touch line either that or the boys warming up and rising to the challenge.

Some great defending by JJ and Latif, good play by Mitch and again Taylor unlucky to get further goals. Joe playing on pitch and not in goal, again helped Taylor and Mitch in which Taylor forced a corner. Unlucky so close Taylor.

As the pressure was mostly down the other end Olie by now was getting bored and resulted in talking to his dad and doing some leg exercises to keep focused, while trying to explain to his dad the merits of removing the dining table in exchange for a den, as every lion needs a den..

A clash by Joe resulted in injury on both sides, probably other side slightly worse than Joe. First aid was administered after the match to the Whiteknights player, but the plasters were not big enough.

Digger's dad has now banned the wrestling, after digger tried to emulate some hold, while defending a corner, and for fear of being unmasking as the “great Romanian Lorry driver destroyer, in the mid life crisis division...

Unfortunately there were no takers to wash the kit this week, in fact there were threats of strike and the kids threatening to take the haribos away!!!

Latif, has kindly volunteered his dad this week, to clean all lions football boots, if you win this week's competition, and can organise an updated team photo, with all kids smiling and looking the same way at the same time :-)
